Overview

This full-day tour heads east of Salalah. At Sumhurum (Khor Rori) stand the ruins of the easternmost outpost of the Hadramawt Kingdom, on the ancient incense route between the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean Sea and India. Khor Rori was an important old port on the coast of Dhofar.

Inland, Wadi Darbat is one of the most famous valleys in Oman, with a beautiful lake. Tawi Atayr, the Well of Birds, is one of the largest sinkholes in the world, 211 m deep and 150 m across, and Jabal Samhan rises to almost 2,100 m.

Head east to Taqah, an old fishing village known for making dried sardines and for its houses in the traditional old Dhofari style.

Visit Taqah Castle, 100 years old, the official residence of the governor of the Taqah region. This fortified house of the wali is built like the Dhofari houses, but with carved doors.

East of Taqah, see the ruins of Sumhurum (Khor Rori). The town was the easternmost outpost of the Hadramawt Kingdom on the ancient incense route, and Khor Rori was an important old port on the coast of Dhofar.

Drive over the mountain and down into Wadi Darbat, the valley of Darbat, one of the most famous valleys in Oman, with a beautiful lake.

Continue to Tawi Atayr, one of the largest sinkholes in the world, 211 m deep and 150 m across. It is also called the Well of Birds, because many birds come here, and it is a wonderful place to watch them and hear them sing.

Go to Jabal Samhan, almost 2,100 m high, for the panoramic view from the top. Camels and Nubian goats are often seen here.

Drive along the coastal road to Mirbat, an old city of slave trading and Arabian horses.

Stop for photos at Bin Ali tomb, about 800 years old, then go through Mirbat Castle and the old merchant houses around it.
