Muscat
This three-day trip takes you from Muscat to Nizwa, up to Jebel Shams and out to the Wahiba Sands.
Nizwa, the capital of the interior and the birthplace of Islam in the Sultanate of Oman, is known for its 17th-century Round Tower Fort and its souq. Jabrin, built in the late 17th century, became a seat of Omani learning.
Wadi Nakhr is known as the Grand Canyon of Oman, and Jebel Shams, at 3,010 metres, is the highest peak in Oman. In the Wahiba Sands, a sea of constantly shifting sands, you can enjoy dune bashing, ride camels and visit a Bedouin family.
Nizwa and Jabrin
After breakfast, drive to Nizwa, the capital of the interior and the birthplace of Islam in the Sultanate of Oman. See its famous Round Tower Fort, built in the 17th century, and its souq, known for its Friday cattle auction, intricately hand-carved khanjars (daggers) and ornamental silver jewellery.
Visit Jabrin, one of Oman's finest castles, built in the late 17th century. It became a seat of Omani learning, and shows Omani ceiling painting at its highest, with beautifully executed woodcarvings.
Overnight in Nizwa. Lunch is optional.
Wadi Nakhr, Jebel Shams and Misfat Al Abrien
Drive along Wadi Nakhr, known as the Grand Canyon of Oman, and enjoy its breathtaking views.
At the end of the wadi you see a village famous for its colourful rugs, made of goat hair with coloured designs.
Reach Jebel Shams, the highest peak in Oman at 3,010 metres, with spectacular views of Wadi Nakhr.
Visit the local weaver and haggle for their weaves.
Stop at Misfat Al Abrien. Lunch and dinner are optional.
Wadi Bani Khaled and the Wahiba Sands
After breakfast, continue to Wadi Bani Khaled, one of the biggest and most beautiful wadis in Oman, and enjoy a refreshing swim in its cool water.
Drive on to the Wahiba Sands to experience a true desert, almost a sea of constantly shifting sands. Drive through the dunes, enjoy 4x4 dune bashing and ride camels.
Visit a local Bedouin family in their home for a close look at their way of life, and share coffee and dates with them.
Enjoy the campfire and dinner, and stay overnight at a desert camp, then return to Muscat in the morning. Lunch is optional.
