Muscat
This three-day trip takes you from Muscat along the coast to Ras Al Hadd, into the Wahiba Sands and on to Nizwa.
On the coast you see the Bamah Sinkhole and the white sandy beach of Fins, and swim from pool to pool in Wadi Shab, one of Oman's most spectacular wadis. At the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Sanctuary, a protected green turtle nesting reserve, you can watch sea turtles nest and lay eggs on the beach. Then swim in Wadi Bani Khaled and spend a night in the desert, with a campfire and dinner.
Nizwa, the capital of the interior and the birthplace of Islam in the Sultanate of Oman, is known for its Round Tower Fort and its souq, and Jabrin, built in the late 17th century, for its painted ceilings and woodcarvings.
Muscat, Wadi Shab and Ras Al Hadd
In the morning, the tour starts with a short tour of Muscat city. Then leave Muscat for Sur by the coastal route, passing Quriyat, a small coastal fishing village.
Make a photo stop at the Bamah Sinkhole, then continue along the white sandy beach of Fins, which invites you in for a relaxing swim.
A graded track leads to Wadi Shab, one of Oman's most spectacular wadis, with fresh water flowing most of the year beside banana plantations and rocky paths. Swim from pool to pool through its warm water.
Continue to Sur and Ras Al Hadd, where your overnight stay is arranged.
After dinner, you are driven to the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Sanctuary, a protected green turtle nesting reserve. Watch Oman's sea turtles nest and lay eggs on the beach, and you may see baby turtles hatching from some nests.
Overnight in Ras Al Hadd. Lunch and dinner are optional.
Wadi Bani Khaled and the Wahiba Sands
After breakfast, continue to Wadi Bani Khaled, one of the biggest and most beautiful wadis in Oman, and enjoy a refreshing swim in its cool water.
Drive on to the Wahiba Sands to experience a true desert, almost a sea of constantly shifting sands. Drive through the dunes, enjoy 4x4 dune bashing and ride camels.
Visit a local Bedouin family in their home for a close look at their way of life, and share coffee and dates with them.
Enjoy the campfire and dinner. Overnight in the desert. Lunch is optional.
Nizwa and Jabrin
After breakfast, drive to Nizwa, the capital of the interior and the birthplace of Islam in the Sultanate of Oman. See its famous Round Tower Fort, built in the 17th century, and its souq, known for its Friday cattle auction, intricately hand-carved khanjars (daggers) and ornamental silver jewellery.
Visit Jabrin, one of Oman's finest castles, built in the late 17th century. It became a seat of Omani learning, and shows Omani ceiling painting at its highest, with beautifully executed woodcarvings.
Return to Muscat in the late afternoon. Lunch is optional.
